Strange quarks and the mystery of the strong force - when you let curiosity lead the way.

The proton is the biggest celebrity of the particle world but is still a mystery. We do not understand it’s mass, spin or radius. If we focus on the mass we acknowledge that the quarks which the proton consists of only contributes with 1%. The remaining 99% are generated by the strong force. How does that work? Why can we only observe quarks by looking at them as a system and not as free particles?

These are the questions that Karin Schönning, researcher at Uppsala University, is trying to figure out. Karin has a degree in engineering and did her PhD in Uppsala. She has also been a research fellow at CERN. Today Karin and her research team are looking for clues regarding the mystery of the strong force by investigating systems with strange quarks.

The lunch that is served with this event is sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
